Naughty List File

Special thanks to Mike Bauerlein and his 3-D printing company NuProto for making my cube look pretty.

A proof of concept game to show how the 6-sided cube holder I created can be used to provide a new way of interacting with video games. Video games are almost always interacted with as a 2-D object as they are generally on screens. Even Sifteo cubes which are starting to move video games closer to physical objects still only have a screen on one side and are therefore still interacted with as 2-D objects. The 6-sided cube holder changes this by creating a way to interact with video games as a 3-D object.

Naughty List takes advantage of the 6-sided cube holder by making it simulate the globe. In this game, you play as a child who is fed up with being put in the naughty list and not receiving gifts on Christmas. And even worse seeing all those spoiled nice kids posting their brand new presents on Facebook. You chase Santa around the globe trying to knock presents out of his sleigh by tapping the screen he pops up on. You lose a life everytime Santa successfully delivers a present.

I realize the game is simple but its actually pretty fun and has sort of a similar feel to the BopIt toy. Also the point of the game is to introduce my cube that allows for a way that video games can be interacted with as a 3-D object. I think the idea of interacting with a 3-D object video game has potential and would excited to see what others can do with the cube or even ditch the cube and make a game with a more complex shape or form like a video game sculpture.

Future Work For the Cube Peripheral

If I have someone begin by looking at an initial starting face of the cube, I can use the accelerometer data to track changes in the orientation of the cube and also track which part of the cube is facing the player as it is manipulated. My next proof of concept game for the cube holder will take advantage of this.

Here is a pic of the original prototype (cardboard and tape) of the 6-sided cube
